headshots don't have to be complicated...

But a good headshot takes finesse that starts with the set design. Minimal set design that is clean can give you more range in other areas ( wardrobe, posing and lighting) that can showcase different looks for your client.

When I first started, I got 1 small white seamless backdrop paper, and it is STILL my go to for every headshot. Even if we add another design with a little more personality, we always do a standard shot on white (or gray) seamless paper.

Set design has 3 components, Backdrop, lighting and props. For my recommended gear for my favorite lighting set check here. Today we are going to be talking about my go to set up for clean minimal backdrop that works for a classic professional headshot.

  1. Seamless paper backdrop- Versitle and does not show wrinkles. Seamless paper is also very easy to edit in post production. Savage Universal has some of the best paper and color options, there are other great brands too. If you are doing only single headshot you will need a least a 53inch wide roll.
  2. Backdrop stand- Adjustable up to 8 feet is usually enough for headshots, especially sitting down posing. This is great option.
  3. SANDBAGS!!! This is a STRONG safety suggestion. Keep your stand secure with weight at the base of the stand. Fill with sand or pepple rock.
